Statue of Liberty to reopen; shutdown keeps other parks, monuments closed

A United States Park Police officer center locks a gate leading to a Statue of Liberty ferry Saturday Jan. 20 2018 in New York. The National Park Service announced that the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island would be closed Saturday

When the Senate failed to approve legislation to keep the government from shutting down before midnight Saturday, the National Park Service announced that the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island would close immediately until further notice.

The Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island within the state of NY, but it is operated by the federal National Park Service. "We came all the way from Miami for this". "Symbolically, you can shut down the government but you can't shut down the Statue of Liberty".

Xanterra Parks & Resorts, a private company that manages lodges, concessions and restaurants in numerous national parks including Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, Rocky Mountain and Zion, said they will remain open during the shutdown.

"It's disappointing", one visitor said.

"We're not coming back", Pettoroso said.

"You have to blame Trump and the Republicans for allowing the shutdown, and they shouldn't get paid", O'Meara said.

"The issue is about immigration and the sense that some people have that this country should close the doors and stop immigration", Cuomo said. During the shutdown, at least half of the daily $55,000 or so in revenue would be lost. Sunday was their first and last opportunity to visit the Statue of Liberty before the end of their visit. They were told Friday that tickets to see the statue were available, only to arrive in lower Manhattan the next morning and learn none was being sold.

"We recognize it's a huge economic attractor and has a big impact not just on rural areas around the Grand Canyon but the state as a whole", Ptak said, adding that the expected cost is around $100,000 per week.

Tourists who went down to lower Manhattan hoping to catch a ferry to the Statue of Liberty were left high and dry on Sunday as both the historic statue and the nearby Ellis island were closed owing to the United States government shutdown.

Cuomo called the statue "a symbol of America" whose closure reflects a government trying "to kick our immigrants".
