'Swatting' suspect Tyler Barriss waives extradition to Kansas

Gamer feud claims first real casualty

The 25-year-old gamer suspected of falsely reporting a crime to police as part of a deadly "swatting" trick is being held in California without bail pending an extradition hearing.

Tyler Barriss, of South Los Angeles, appeared before a judge in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, five days after being arrested on a fugitive-from-justice warrant for allegedly making the so-called "swatting" call.

Barriss could fight the extradition request.

Officer Paul Cruz, a spokesman for the Wichita police, said the two city police departments are working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation on the case, but provided no further details including on possible charges or extradition. It's unclear if he has a lawyer. The swatting occurred later, after a call was made to Wichita police about a domestic disturbance where someone had shot his father and was holding his family hostage.

The incident began around 6:18 p.m.

This kind of prank-calling police with a fake emergency in hopes of getting a SWAT team sent to a target's house-is common enough in the gaming world that it has a nickname: "swatting".

SWAuTistic sought out an interview with KrebsOnSecurity on the afternoon of December 29, in which he said he routinely faked hostage and bomb threat situations to emergency centers across the country in exchange for money. Police thought that they were responding to a violent hostage situation at the home.

The officers ordered him again to put his hands up but the man lowered them down again, police said. Officers then entered the home and found four individuals inside alive and unharmed, police said. Finch died a few minutes later at a hospital. "He feared the male just pulled a weapon from his waistband, retrieved a gun and was in the process of pointing it at the officers to the east", Deputy Chief Troy Livingston of the Wichita Police Department said at a press conference Friday.

Green says the incident is tragic, and despite training and due diligence, no law enforcement agency is immune.

Andrew Finch was shot and killed during the incident.

The Kansas police are now holding an investigation into Andrew's death, though Lisa is distressed by the police's handling of the situation.

Lisa Finch, the victim's mother, was home at the time of the shooting and recounted her son's death to the Wichita Eagle: "They didn't knock on the door, my son opened it because he heard something, he screamed, and they shot him".

Among those questions, she said, are: What is the name of the officer who killed her son? In addition to the 911 call audio, police also released seven seconds of grainy footage from a body-camera worn by an officer standing next to the officer who fired the shot.

Police said they believed the fake 911 call Thursday was actually made 1,300 miles away from Kansas, in Los Angeles by Barriss.
