Trump Denies Using Vulgar Slur; Top Democrat Says He Said It

President Donald Trump did not respond to questions about his use of a vulgarity or his question about why the US should accept more immigrants from Haiti and African nations than from countries like Norway. The Washington Post said that during the meeting he said immigrants from Haiti should be left out of any new agreement approved by Congress. Trump's contemptuous blanket description of African countries startled lawmakers in the meeting and immediately revived charges that the president is racist.

Trump ignored press questions about the issue as he signed a proclamation declaring a holiday in honour of civil rights hero Martin Luther King Jr. - as presidents do every year. Day, according to The Daily Beast.

Durbin, though, just days ago, used the exact term in a meeting at the White House where he sat next to Trump to negotiate the terms of an immigration deal.

The two senators who struck a deal with each other on an immigration deal signaled Friday they'll push ahead with their bargain despite opposition from President Trump, saying they sense growing bipartisan support.

She said Trump's alleged comments were "completely unacceptable", telling WPLG-TV in Miami, "If that's not racism, I don't know how you can define it".

He made them during a discussion of an emerging bipartisan deal to give legal status to immigrants illegally brought to the United States as children, those with knowledge of the conversation said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the meeting. In a series of tweets early Friday, he said that was not the language he used. "It is not true".

Conservative host Tucker Carlson defended Trump's "s***hole" statements saying, "Those places are unsafe, they're dirty, they're corrupt, and they're poor, and that's the main reason those immigrants are trying to come here". Durbin added, "When the question was asked about Haitians. he said, "Haitians?" During a 2016 campaign event in Miami, he said "the Haitian people deserve better" and told the audience of Haitian-Americans he wanted to "be your greatest champion, and I will be your champion".

In questioning "Why do we want all these people from Africa here?"

At the end of the meeting, Durbin said, it was clear Trump had rejected the plan. Durbin said, adding that the president then went on to describe African nations as "s-tholes". I want a merit based system of immigration and people who will help take our country to the next level. There is no transcript or recording of that meeting.

Graham released his own statement, not directly addressing whether Trump made the remarks, but touting diversity as a national strength and saying he appreciates "Senator Durbin's statements".

In a statement after Trump's comments were first reported, the White House did not deny them.
