Republicans and Democrats have tangled in recent weeks over the origins of the dossier, which was funded in part by Trump's political opponents, and how the FBI and other agencies may have used the dossier in their investigations.
Trump attacked Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, earlier this week after she released the transcript of a committee interview with the co-founder of the research firm behind a controversial dossier containing allegations of ties between Trump's presidential campaign and Russian Federation.
Dianne Feinstein, the ranking Democrat on the Senate committee, released the testimony without Republican approval, in an apparent bid to neutralise Republican criticism of the Russian Federation investigation.
Feinstein, the ranking Democrat on the Senate judiciary committee, said she released the transcript because "the American people deserve the opportunity to see what he said and judge for themselves". "Must have tough Primary!" On Jan. 2, Simpson and fellow Fusion GPS co-founder Peter Fritsch called on congressional investigators to release their testimony. Her staff helped conduct the interview with Simpson, who had also asked for the interview to be released.
The comments come after Trump had already lashed out at the investigations on Twitter Wednesday morning, urging Republicans to take control of the inquiries and repeating his claim that they are on a "witch hunt".
Simpson also defended Steele, saying that the well-respected former intelligence officer "has a sterling reputation as a person who doesn't exaggerate, doesn't make things up, doesn't sell baloney".
The criminal referral urged the DOJ to examine whether Steele made false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation "about the distribution of claims" contained in the dossier. A number of Trump's closest aides and associates have been interviewed, including his son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner. "Russia & the world is laughing at the stupidity they are witnessing".
Cohen is a central figure in the dossier, which alleges an effort by high ranking officials in Russian Federation to develop a relationship with the Trump campaign. Then Sen. Dianne Feinstein D-Calif., released it on Tuesday against Republican committee members' wishes.
"The innuendo and misinformation circulating about the transcript are part of a deeply troubling effort to undermine the investigation into potential collusion and obstruction of justice", Feinstein said in a statement.
