Trump says administration taking look at libel laws

Donald Trump medical exam

"We are going to take a strong look at our country's libel laws, so that when somebody says something that is false and defamatory about someone, that person will have meaningful recourse in our courts", said Trump.

In 1964, the Supreme Court ruled that news publications could not be sued for libel by public figures unless there was grounds for false reporting. "We are going to take a very, very strong look at that".

USA law does not empower the president to change the nation's libel laws.

"You can't say things that are false, knowingly false, and be able to smile as money pours into your bank account", Trump said during a meeting of his Cabinet at the White House on Wednesday.

Numerous actors have contested the claims made in Fire and Fury, including White House aides and Washington Post reporter Mark Berman. The president has also uttered a number of falsehoods about others, such as saying then-President Barack Obama was not born in the United States.

Trump's legal frustrations extended beyond libel law.

President Trump speaks during a meeting on immigration with House and Senate lawmakers on January 10.

Thanks to Trump's appointment of Neil Gorsuch, the court now has a conservative majority, but may not necessarily fall in line behind the Republican president.

In what was seen as an attempt to show Trump is mentally fit and in command, the president had kept a pool of reporters, including a TV camera, inside of a meeting he had on Tuesday with USA lawmakers on immigration.

According to Trump, that tax reform is already helping Americans with "more than 1 million workers already receiving a tax cut bonus". “If you want to take it that further step, Ill take the heat, ” he said. He gave a remarkable glimpse into how he sees the presidency, offering little guidance on details but basking in showmanship and dealmaking.

He said, without providing evidence or details, that TV anchors had sent him letters thanking him for letting so much of the negotiations happen on camera.

This week, two incredible events unfolded before our eyes: American television viewers were invited into the White House Cabinet Room, where for almost an hour they watched as President Donald Trump effectively led a bipartisan meeting in which he and congressional Democrats made real progress on immigration reform. "You're all out of business".
