Trump says US-Norway ties 'robust'

Donald Trump holds a joint news conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg in the East Room of the White House in Washington U.S

The exchange over the environment - and Solberg's efforts to make the business case for fighting climate change - stood out as the two leaders bonded over economic ties and military might.

"Norway is a great customer, and a great ally and a great friend", Trump says.

"It treated the United States very unfairly", Trump said during a news conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg.

The U.S. pledged to reduce its carbon emissions between 26 and 28 percent by 2025 under the agreement, and Trump has consistently said it is a "bad deal" for Washington.

"We could conceivably go back in", Trump reiterated.

The formal process for exiting the Paris Agreement takes several years, and the USA therefore remains a party to the deal, which sets a goal of limiting average global temperature increases to "well below" 2C since before the end of the century. "We are a country rich in gas and coal and oil, and lots of other things, and there was a tremendous penalty for using it". "It took a lot of our asset values".

In June, Trump announced his decision to withdraw the US from the Paris agreement, making the country the only one that has pulled out of the accord.

During the briefing, Trump appeared to stress that his administration is "very strong" on the environment. "Our EPA and our EPA commissioners are very, very powerful in the sense that they want to have clean water, clean air, but we also want businesses that can compete and the Paris Accord rally would have taken away our competitive edge, and we're not going to let that happen". Seated in the Oval Office, Trump notes that Norway has been a strong consumer of US -built military equipment, including the F-35 aircraft. We're not gonna let that happen. In fact most of your energy or your electricity is produced by hydro.

"I wish we'd do some of that", he remarked-possibly uninformed that the USA, too, harbors sizable hydropower resources, which produced 267.8 TWh, or about 7% of the nation's total generation, in 2016.

Moreover, the agreement hurt United States businesses overall and gave advantages to other countries such as China, Trump added.
