"We want them to get the highest care and the care that they so richly deserve", Trump said before he signed the order in the Oval Office.
While it's accurate that any health information released about Trump must be approved by him, that does not mean that the bulletin written up by the president's physician, Ronny Jackson, should simply be viewed as a thinly veiled attempt to whitewash any concerns about the president's health, said Robert Darling, a former White House physician who served President Bill Clinton from 1996 to 1999. Earlier information about Trump's health came from his personal physician, Dr. Harold Bornstein, who famously declared in 2015 that Trump would be "the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency".
Trump himself has pushed back hard against any suggestion that he's mentally unfit, this week declaring himself "a very stable genius".
Trump's checkup comes amid questions about his health and publication of the new book, "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House", which casts doubt on Trump's fitness for office. The 6-foot-3 Trump weighed 236 pounds, and his body mass index, or BMI, of 29.5 put him in the category of being overweight for his height.
The book has been dismissed as "tabloid trash" by the White House. Results of past presidential physicals have included basic data like weight, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
But the president, 71, will not have a psychiatric evaluation, despite claims he is suffering from dementia.

Still, the decision to schedule a physical for this coming Friday was ultimately up to Trump.
Having said that, Trump, in this case, is in keeping with prior precedent, as all presidents since Ronald Reagan have scheduled physicals while in office and released the results to the public. The doctor's 2016 letter said Trump's testosterone level, 441.6, was in the normal range, as were his PSA reading for prostate abnormalities and tests of his liver and thyroid. The American Heart Association has said that the best types of exercise increase the heart rate and make a person breathe heavily, but that activities like golf don't provide as much cardiovascular benefit since they don't require much extra effort. He is also the heaviest president in at least a generation and consumes a diet heavy with Big Macs, Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, fried chicken, pizza, well-done steak and two rounds of dessert.
Why is Donald Trump undergoing a physical?
Dr Jackson was deployed in the Iraq War during the Bush administration as Emergency Medicine Physician in the Surgical Shock Trauma Platoon in Taqaddum in Iraq.
Dr Jackson served as physician to Barack Obama while he was in office and now serves as the appointed Physician to the President and Chief White House Physician.
