United Nations rights office decries Trump's 'sh**thole' remark as 'racist', 'vulgar'

US President Donald Trump speaks during a joint news conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg in the East Room of the White House in Washington

U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that he did not use the vulgar language that media reports said he uttered in a discussion on immigration.

Trump previous year ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which provided protection from deportation along with the ability to work legally in the U.S. He gave Congress until March to come up with a legislative fix.

"I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians", he said on twitter, adding that democrats had made the accusations up.

He said the reported comments were "shocking and shameful" and added: "I'm sorry, but there's no other word one can use but racist".

"He continued: ".countries which are doing badly. Haiti ranks as one of the world's least-developed countries, according to the United Nations.

African Union spokeswoman Ebba Kalondo said: "Given the historical reality of how many Africans arrived in the United States as slaves, this statement flies in the face of all accepted behaviour and practice".

In a fit of anger, the US President reportedly told lawmakers, "Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?". That was the US economy's annual rate of growth from July through September, according to Commerce Department data last month.

Representative Steny Hoyer of Maryland, a senior Democratic lawmaker, said that Trump's comments were "racist and a disgrace". Trump on Friday did not directly reference using the expletive, but insisted that the language was more generally "tough".

Other African nations have begun speaking up.

Anderson Cooper vividly remembers what it was like in Haiti after the devastating 7.1-magnitude natural disaster in 2010 that left up to 300,000 people dead, displaced 1.5 million people, and brought together survivors who spent days digging through the rubble to rescue their fellow Haitians.

"As for Africa, he asked why more people from "(expletive removed) countries" should be allowed into the USA, the sources said.

Repeating the term attributed to Trump a day earlier, spokesman Rupert Colville says that "you can not dismiss entire countries and continents as "shitholes".

"Unless it was specifically said about South Sudan, we have nothing to say", South Sudan government spokesman Ateny Wek Ateny told The Associated Press. Three people briefed on the conversation described the language. The White House denied those comments.

Republican Rep. Mia Love of Utah, the daughter of Haitian immigrants, said Trump's comments were "unkind, divisive, elitist and fly in the face of our nation's values".

"This is not just a story about vulgar language. Do we need more Hatians?'" The Trump administration recently made a decision to soon end Temporary Protected Status for citizens of countries like Haiti and El Salvador, who came to the U.S.to escape natural disasters.

Haiti's ambassador to the United States, Paul Alidor, said he had asked for an official explanation of the comments.

Uganda's state minister for global relations, Henry Okello Oryem, said the comments were "unfortunate and regrettable", adding: "W e pray that the almighty god gives him wisdom to change his mind about people who are suffering and looking for safe haven in America".

Trump's meek denial came during a series of tweets blasting an immigration deal reached by six bipartisan senators on Thursday. "These are human beings, not commodities", Colville said.

Africa is waking up to find President Donald Trump has finally taken an interest in the continent.
