USA shutdown to end as Senate Republicans and Democrats reach a deal

Trump's suggestion of the so-called nuclear option was quickly dismissed by lawmakers

The U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly on Monday to end the three-day-old government shutdown with 81-18 votes to reopen funding for the Federal Government till February 8. DACA refers to the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which provides legal status and work permits to immigrants brought to the US illegally as children.

"The Democrats are turning down services and security for citizens in favor of services and security for non-citizens". And if McConnell doesn't follow through, Democrats will be able to use this promise to vote against the next spending bill and pin the blame on Republicans.

President Trump said he was pleased the Democrats had "come to their senses", but said he would only make a long-term deal on immigration "if and only if it's good for our country".

Democrats are demanding that young immigrants brought to the country illegally be given protection.

It looks like the government shutdown will end soon. It was read by spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders at a press briefing.

"It is abundantly clear the Senate can not make progress on any of these crucial matters until the government is reopened", he said.

"As I have always said, once the government is funded my administration will work toward solving the problem of very unfair illegal immigration", the statement continued.

"The issue of the Dreamers demands resolution", Schumer said on the Senate floor, referring to DACA recipients. "Let me be clear, this immigration debate will have a level playing field at the outset and an amendment process that is fair to all sides".

"Open the government back up and then we'll get back to negotiating", Ryan said on CBS' "Face the Nation" on Sunday.

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), who holds hardline views on immigration, said he hadn't heard anything new in what McConnell is saying on immigration, beyond what he has said repeatedly for weeks. He remained undecided on his vote until the last minute Friday, remaining mum on his intentions until giving his thumbs down on the Senate floor.

Democrats have withheld support for a temporary funding bill to keep the government open over the DACA issue.

Millona says the Democrats compromise is "extremely disappointing". He also added that the short-term spending bill did not address disaster relief for Florida after Hurricane Irma. If a deal is not struck by the February 8 deadline, Schumer said the Senate will immediately move on to consideration of legislation to protect Dreamers impacted by President Trump's decision to end the DACA executive order. Dreamers could face deportation in March if Congress fails to act, and any explicit compromise would likely face resistance from conservative Republicans in the House.

"I don't think we should wait for the president". Susan Collins, a Republican from Maine.
