Versace family upset over Ryan Murphy's new show

But according to the Versace family, this version of the story, based on a book by Maureen Orth and directed by Ryan Murphy, isn't an accurate depiction of what actually happened. The first season of American Crime Story is currently streaming on Netflix, and our 2018 Netflix guide can point you toward your other streaming options now and in the coming weeks. Now, they have gone even further, calling the show's source material inaccurate. The family's statement (via THR) indicates that the show won't exactly be filled with nuggets of inside information courtesy of the people involved back when the tragedy unfolded in 1997.

Another American Crime Success Story?

The family of Italian designer Gianni Versace has distanced itself from a long-awaited US television series about his violent death.

The Versace family issued a statement about the program on Monday, disowning the show and labelling it a "work of fiction" they did not authorize, but Penelope says she did her due diligence before committing to the project by seeking out Donatella's personal blessing. It stormed the Golden Globes in 2016, scooping Best Actress for Sarah Paulson, and Best Limited Series or Television Film overall. The series will also cover the gay community in San Diego, as well as Cunanan's struggles with the homophobic culture of the time. Edgar Ramirez will play Gianni Versace, while Darren Criss will play Cunanan.

U.S. channel FX, which airs the series, responded to the Versace family's first statement.

"Like the original American Crime Story series The People vs. O.J. Simpson, which was based on Jeffrey Toobin's nonfiction bestseller The Run of His Life, FX's follow-up The Assassination of Gianni Versace is based on Maureen Orth's heavily researched and authenticated nonfiction best-seller Vulgar Favors, which examined the true-life crime spree of Andrew Cunanan". As the media scrambled to make the connection between high-profile victim and shadowy assailant, it was Orth who broke the news that Cunanan claimed to have known the fashion superstar-perhaps more intimately than Versace's handlers were comfortable admitting publicly.

"We issued a statement saying that this story is based on Maureen Orth's book, which is a very celebrated, lauded work of non-fiction that was vetted now for close to 20 years", Murphy said.
