Waymo has also recently started winter testing in MI and has returned to testing in San Francisco.

Waymo, Alphabet Inc's self-driving auto unit, would start testing its self-driving vehicles in Atlanta, it said on Twitter on Monday.

With Atlanta added to the growing list, Waymo now has an impressively large number of driving conditions in which to test its cars, ranging from hills and extreme heat to rain and bitter cold.

"Metro Atlanta is the next stop for Waymo's test program", the tweet read.

"Now that we have the world's first fleet of fully self-driving cars on public roads, we're focused on taking our technology to a wide variety of cities and environments", a Waymo representative told The Drive.

Waymo's autonomous vehicles will have to tackle high levels of traffic in Atlanta, considering the city is the ninth most congested metro area in the world, according to the Inrix Traffic Scorecard. This builds Waymo's map of the area in far greater detail than any Global Positioning System or street map is capable of doing, essentially creating a 3D model of the area and all of its fixed obstacles and traffic signals. The city ranks the ninth most-congested metro area in the world, behind just Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco for the worst traffic in the US, according to the Inrix Traffic Scorecard. The area also experiences about 50 inches of rainfall each year, making it a good test ground for less-than-ideal weather situations.
