Weinstein activists are just puritans, say Catherine Deneuve and Catherine Millet

High-profile actress among 100 French women who say ‘trying to seduce someone’ isn’t an ‘attack

French actress Catherine Deneuve has publicly signed an open letter condemning the anti-sexual harassment movements now springing up in Hollywood, including Time's Up and #MeToo, as a "witch-hunt" against men.

They write: "This expedited justice already has its victims, men prevented from practising their profession as punishment, forced to resign, etc., while the only thing they did wrong was touching a knee, trying to steal a kiss, or speaking about "intimate" things at a work dinner, or sending messages with sexual connotations to a woman whose feelings were not mutual".

French newspaper Le Monde on Tuesday published an open letter, signed by Denueve and company, that denounced the massive wave of sexual misconduct accusations against men sparked by the #MeToo phenomenon, propelled forward by the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that other women to sign the letter include author Catherine Millet, who wrote the memoir The Sexual Life of Catherine M. and porn star-turned-radio agony aunt Brigitte Lahaie.

According to AFP, the letter went on to renounce such social media campaigns like #MeToo and its French equivalent, #BalanceTonPorc ("Call out your pig"), and said that these movements were to blame for the resulting "puritanical ... wave of purification". "After "calling out your pig, ' what are we going to have, 'call out your whore"?"

"I don't think it is the right method to change things, it is excessive", Deneuve said about the #MeToo movement.

Oscar-nominated Deneuve, 74, is best known internationally for playing a bored housewife who spends her afternoons as a prostitute in Luis Bunuel's classic 1967 film, "Belle du Jour".

The petition alleges that women are "sufficiently aware that the sexual urge is by its nature wild and aggressive". But we are also clear-eyed enough not to confuse an awkward attempt to pick someone up with a sexual attack'.

"As women, we do not recognize ourselves in this feminism which, beyond the denunciation of abuses of power, takes the face of a hatred of men and sexuality", the letter said.
