'Wrong button' pushed caused ballistic missile alert mistake - governor of Hawaii

Hawaii missile threat

The warning went out to television and radio as well as cell phones, Ige added.

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency tweeted about 10 minutes after the initial alert that there was no threat, but it didn't reach people who aren't on Twitter. "Seek immediate shelter. This is not a drill", was sent to the cellphones of the state's residents.

Tulsi Gabbard, the Democratic representative for Hawaii also confirmed the message was sent out in error and that there was no missile threat. "It was a false alarm based on a human error", Schatz wrote.

"There is no missile threat", Lt. Commander Joe Nawrocki said.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai also announced a "full investigation" by the FCC.

"This system we have been told to rely upon failed and failed miserably today", Saiki said. The notification said a ballistic missile threat was inbound. You think to yourself, 'Am I going to say goodbye to my brother this way?

Pristelski said at 8:07 a.m., local time, on Saturday the alert came across on her iPhone. "State of Hawaii will send out a correction message as soon as possible".

More than 30 minutes after the alert went out, the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency put out a tweet saying there was no incoming missile.

Stevie Meeker, who grew up in Omaha, says she saw the alert on her phone right away and tried calling around to see what was happening.

For the people of Hawaii and their families, the false alarm is an awakening. That's one hell of a mistake to make'.

He told News9 that when he received the alert on his phone, he wasn't sure what to do.

"People just started scurrying around, just trying to get into bathrooms, I was with my two girls, eight and 10 so kids were crying and nobody really knew what to do", Robbyn Leventhal, a Hawaii resident, told Al Jazeera. It was later confirmed that the message was a result of an employee's mistake and measures would be taken so this kind of terrifying thing never happens again.
