Aus look forward to cash on wounded South Africa

"The batters should be looking forward to this series; you love going up against good pace, this will be a fantastic series for the viewers to watch". "Coming to South Africa, it's probably the most similar conditions you get to Australia or probably any conditions in the world for two countries".

Beyond that obvious face-off, there is context to the series for both sides.

"I don't think a great deal changes there".

They haven't lost a series in this country since South Africa's return from global isolation, a record Smith is keen to maintain.

"We've played some really good cricket and hopefully we can keep that up here in South Africa. We got beaten by them at home a year ago, which was a bit of a low point for Australian cricket, so it will be great if we could turn the tide here in South Africa", Australia's captain Steve Smith said in Johannesburg yesterday.

Speaking from the team hotel in Sandton Smith said: "I've been watching bits and pieces of it [South Africa v India]". This series is going to be another good challenge for us.

What most are looking forward too is that battle between Australia's quick bowlers, and whoever SA chooses out of Dale Steyn, who's expected to be fit for the first Test in Durban, Morné Morkel, Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi.

"We saw some of the wickets that looked quite hard for the batters", Smith said before adding, "For us it's just about playing what's in front of you, whether you've got a flat wicket or a green wicket that's doing something. That's my message to the boys - you don't know what you're going to get in each Test at each venue, and it's just about playing the way you need to for each set of conditions", noted Smith, the No.1 Test batsman, who is feeling fresh after the short break. The toughest challenge for both sides could be retaining energy levels after a taxing summer.

The tourists have a potential 11 days to prepare for the first Test, including a three-day match against South Africa A in Benoni starting on Thursday. It doesn't take the Australian players as long to adapt to what they'll face here as would be the case in England, where the ball swings more and India, where it spins.

"But five or six days ago I wanted to do it again", he said.
