Immigration defends move to block Orengo, Wanjigi Zimbabwe travel

Siaya Senator James Orengo and businessman Jimi Wanjigi addressing the media at JKIA

Siaya Senator James Orengo and billionaire businessman Jimmy Wanjigi were barred by immigration officials from jetting to Zimbabwe, where they were set to attend the funeral of the country's opposition icon Morgan Tsvangirai.

Kihalangwa further points out that the department was not notified of the Court order lifting the suspension of the passports belonging to Orengo and Wanjigi and the two could thus not be allowed to proceed with their planned flight out of the country.

They said they will stay at the airport until the orders are heeded.

He added that airport officials had requested the two opposition supporters to provide the court orders but they failed to do so.

It was then that Wanjigi started shouting at the immigration officials present saying that they were acting against the law. "Instead, they showed some writings on their phones purporting those were the Court orders", he said.

"The immigration boss says he has not seen the orders yet he has them".

"Glad to hear that court orders will be obeyed by our beloved and benevolent government.reassuring for the rule of law.", tweeted Ahmednassir on Tuesday.

He will then travel to Buhera, some 300 kilometres from Harare where the MDC leader will be laid to rest on Tuesday, his spokesman Dennis Onyango said in a statement sent to newsrooms.

Salim Lone, an adviser to Raila Odinga, told local media: "A court order was immediately served on the airport immigration office for the return of their passports, but the officers refused to carry out the court order and the passports were not returned".

"The said orders had not been served by the time the duo wanted to travel".

Other opposition figures seeking restoration of their passports in the case include political scientist Dr Adams Oloo, Lawyer Paul Mwangi, Dagoretti North MP Simba Arati and Henry Mien, a member of the NASA strategy team.

In the petition filed at the Milimani Law courts, the leaders argue that the government action to suspend their passports is "unreasonable, grossly heavy handed and unjustified in an open democratic society".

The seven said the decision to suspend their passports was communicated via a letter dated February 5, 2018 which was addressed to some of them, in some instances some of their passports were confiscated at the port of departure from Kenya without notification and reasons.
