Jamie Anderson wins silver for USA in women's Big Air event

PyeongChang 2018An audacious last-jump gamble paid off as Austria's Anna Gasser took gold in the inaugural Winter Olympic Games women's big air competition at the Alpensia ski jumping area on Thursday 22 February.

The tricky aspect of the big air final is the scoring. Each rider's total score was based on their best two scores (out of three), but those scores had come from different tricks. She started with a cab double underflip, a trick she's had on lock for a while now, on her first attempt.

Leading the event after both the first and second runs of the event, which is scored on the best two scores posted over three runs, the 27-year-old from South Lake Tahoe, California, saw Anna Gasser of Austria jump in front to win gold with her final run.

Gasser was the top qualifier and was able to land cleanly following her massive trick that garnered her a score of 96. She was hoping the big frontside 1080 she landed in her first run, then a follow-up 900, would be enough to secure her second gold in South Korea. She maintained the lead until Gasser bumped her down on the very last run of the contest. Earlier in these Games, she successfully defended her slopestyle gold medal. She managed to overtake Anderson, but the silver medal is certainly nothing to scoff at.

Zoi Sadowski-Synnott of New Zealand won bronze with a score of 157.50.

Marino's Olympics ended without a medal.
