Amazon Recalls own brand battery chargers after 53 failures

Affected Amazon Basics Portable Power Bank models.

The rubberized or metallic power banks are black and rectangular. Those are model numbers B00ZQ4JQAA, B00LRK8JDC, B00LRK8IV0, B00LRK8I7O, B00LRK8EVO and B00LRK8HJ8.

Amazon is sending out emails to those who have purchased the power banks, recommending they immediately stop using them.

According to The Verge, the e-mail Amazon sent to customers offers a link that they can click to register the affected products and learn how to return them. The power banks, sold between December 2014 and July 2017, have a risk of overheating, which can cause the unit to melt, posing a fire hazard. The Consumer Protection Safety Commission has announced a new recall involving half a dozen AmazonBasics products, all of them power banks.

Amazon doesn't manufacture the AmazonBasics electronics products itself, but rather rebrands devices made by a third-party manufacturer.

Amazon have issued a product recall for 6 models of their own brand AmazonBasics portable battery chargers after 53 reports of overheating failures including one report of chemical burns due to contact with battery acid and four reports of property damage, including fire and smoke damage. You shouldn't just mail the power bank back to Amazon in a box; judging by how the recall of Samsung's infamous Galaxy Note 7 went, you'll need to ship any potentially defective devices back in a special fireproof box. The retailer is contacting known purchasers directly. If your smartphone's battery is running low, you can plug the handsets into the power banks and draw power from them to recharge your handset's battery.
