California Teacher Accidentally Discharges Weapon During Public Safety Class

Dennis Alexander a teacher at Seaside High School in California accidentally fired a gun inside a classroom injuring a student

A teacher leading a high school course in gun safety accidentally fired a shot from a handgun in a classroom, with three students suffering minor injuries.

In an email to parents, the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District said, "Upon learning of the incident, our Human Resources department, school site administration and the Seaside Police Department immediately began investigating the incident, including interviewing students in the class".

However, the student's father, Fermin Gonzales, told KSBW 8 that it was his understanding that fragments from the bullet ricocheted off the ceiling and lodged in the boy's neck.

"It's just so insane that the teacher teaching them about gun safety shoots one off and hits the ceiling - and then hearing that he got hit was just insane", said the student's father, Fermin Gonzales III.

Gonzales said Alexander apologized to the class for mistakenly firing his gun, however, none of the school authorities checked up on all the students post-incident to make sure they were not hurt.

UPDATE 6:45pm: Diffenbaugh, in a follow up conversation, says it's against state law and district board policy to have a non-authorized individual carry a firearm on campus, and that Alexander was not authorized by the school district to have one. The teacher has been placed on administrative leave for the duration of the on-going investigation.

The student injured during the California teacher's lecture has been released from the emergency room a couple of hours later.

Teachers are legally not allowed to have firearms in California classrooms, even if they have a permit.

UPDATE 5pm: Sand City Police Chief Brian Ferrante says that Alexander had his last gun safety training "a little less than a year ago".

Dennis Alexander of Seaside City Council.

"We're looking into any violation of city ordinance or the penal code and we'll determine whether or not there are any applicable charges", Pridgen said.

"I think a lot of questions on parents' minds are, why a teacher would be pointing a loaded firearm at the ceiling in front of students", Superintendent PK Diffenbaugh told KSBW.

Alexander has been placed on administrative leave as the officials look into the incident. President Donald Trump has propagated the idea of arming teachers with guns.
