Celtics' Smart out indefinitely with thumb injury

Smart was seen wearing a protective cast on his shooting hand after the 99-97 loss to the Indiana Pacers.

Ainge disputed a report that Smart had suffered a torn tendon, saying instead that Smart had suffered ligament damage near the thumb.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported it first, noting the injury was being called a sprain but was still under scrutiny. Irving is expected to miss some time while his knee heals.

Danny Ainge said Monday night the team won't know for "a couple of days" about the extent of Smart's injury. Smart had his thumb taped up and returned to finish the game. Smart is now going over his treatment options with the Celtics medical staff, but with no clear timetable to return, he should be sent to the waiver wire in most cases.

"Sore, but it will be all right", Smart told reporters after the game. As of Monday afternoon, they had not learned whether the guard will need surgery.

The Celtics are 4.3 points per 100 possessions better this season with Smart on the court, although surprisingly most of the bump is on the offensive end.

Those numbers ballooned to 7.8 points and 5.3 rebounds since the All-Star break.

The Celtics are also dealing with an injury to second-year forward Jaylen Brown (concussion).
