CNBC's Cramer Says Colleague Larry Kudlow is Leader to Replace Cohn

In this file photo taken on January 6, 2018 US President Donald Trump shakes hands with Gary Cohn, Director of the National Economic Council, during a retreat with Republican lawmakers and members of his Cabinet, at Camp David in Thurmont, Maryland.

Scott Paul, president of the Alliance for American Manufacturing, who has known Navarro for more than a decade, described him as "someone who certainly speaks his mind and is not afraid to present ideas and data that are contrarian".

"I'm looking at Larry Kudlow very strongly".

Kudlow, an economic analyst who informally advised Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign, penned an op-ed in the National Review with two others urging the President to rethink his decision on tariffs before he signed them.

That's according to reports Saturday that fingers Liddell as the likely next head of the National Economic Council, the policymaking advisory body that is now led by Gary Cohn.

A committed believer in free trade, Kudlow, like Cohn, is critical of tariffs.

Liddell, like the former Goldman Sachs executive Cohn, has a background in crunching numbers and dealing with Wall Street.

"And he's going to go out and make another couple of hundred million and then he's gonna maybe come back", Trump joked. And then you kind of work out a deal and I think that's what he's done. Vacancies abound throughout the West Wing and the administration at large, from critical roles like staff secretary to more junior positions in the press office. Trump suggested last Thursday that he wouldn't replace Cohn with someone who is similarly opposed to tariffs, which were one of the principal reasons that Cohn resigned.

The White House said this week that Cohn would leave his gig soon.

"He's spoken to the president".
