Denver Broncos going after free-agent fix in Keenum at QB

Sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter the Broncos will reel in Keenum, 30, to be their quarterback of the present and future when free agency officially opens Wednesday afternoon.

Keenum has been allowed to hit the open market by the Vikings despite leading them to the NFC championship game last season.

The move increases the chances that Minnesota will sign free-agent quarterback Kirk Cousins to take over since Denver had been one of four suitors for him.

Six years ago, Elway landed Peyton Manning, the biggest free agent prize in National Football League history, following his release by the Colts and a series of neck fusion surgeries.

Out of those three teams, the Jets have the most cap space available, but the Vikings offer Cousins the best supporting cast to immediately compete for a Super Bowl.

The Broncos went 5-11 last season and have missed the playoffs each of the past two years after winning Super Bowl 50 in the 2015 season.

At the scouting combine, two weeks before the start of free agency, Elway did compare the "fluid" nature of chasing a quarterback in free agency this year to the pursuit of Manning. He signed with the Houston Texans who at that time were coached by current Broncos senior advisor Gary Kubiak.

According to James Palmer of NFL Network, Denver has picked up the option for wide receiver Demaryius Thomas. We just have to figure out a way to get it right.

It is not certain yet what sort of contract that Keenum, who made $2 million last season, will get.

"I still think that we're not too far away", Elway said earlier in the offseason. The last quarterback to get his first 10-win season at the age of 29 or older and then repeat the same feat the following year?
