Donald Trump suggests USA may need to create a 'space force'

But don't expect Captain Kirk ordering phasers set on stun, Battlestar Galactica or ray guns blazing in orbit in the near future, space experts said.

"My new national strategy for space recognizes that space is a war-fighting domain", Trump casually mentioned.

It was unclear whether The Donald was joking about the idea of "Space Force". "Very soon, we're going to Mars", Trump said, before stating, "You wouldn't have been going to Mars if my opponent won".

Republican congressman Mike Rogers, who proposed the idea, argued that the Air Force was prioritising its fighter jets over space, and a dedicated service was needed to stay ahead of China and Russian Federation in what was described as the next frontier of warfare. You see the rockets going up left and right.

It could be a bureaucratic nightmare, said O'Keefe, a professor at Syracuse University.

"So think of that, Space Force", Trump continued. "We are spending a lot and we have a lot of private money coming in, tremendous".

While Trump was nearly jokingly floating the idea, there has always been a military aspect to the space race.

It says the Air Force has to move toward creating a space defense unit within itself called the Space Corps. NASA is much more public, but the military program is just as big. For the past several years, the military has been flying an unmanned space plane, a lot like the retired civilian space shuttle but smaller, experts said.

"At a time when we are trying to integrate the department's joint warfighting functions, I do not wish to add a separate service that would likely present a narrower and even parochial approach to space operations", Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told Congressman Michael Turner in a letter last July.

"Space is for exploration and lifting up humanity", Newman said.
