Dzeko hails 'patient' Roma after narrow last-16 win

Roma v Shakhtar Donetsk betting preview

Edin Dzeko's second-half goal was enough to see Roma narrowly overcome Shakhtar Donetsk in the last-16 of the Champions League as they won 1-0 on the night.

It took Dzeko just 22 seconds to work Andriy Pyatov for the first time, but Shakhtar would not bow easily to the hosts' early pressure and were soon knocking the ball around with confidence in the Roma half.

They endured a nervy finish, however, as Shakhtar ended the match on the front foot despite playing the final few minutes with 10 men after Ivan Ordets was sent off.

Shakhtar ran out 2-1 winners in Ukraine, coming from behind to win thanks to goals from Facundo Ferreyra and Fred.

Edin Dzeko credited his Roma team-mates for a "patient" performance as they dumped Shakhtar Donetsk out of the Champions League. 'I am totally convinced that this team is going places'. "We are among the eight strongest teams in Europe, it means we are strong too".

"I didn't want to leave, because all season we play for nights like this", he said.

Roma hadn't conceded in its three Champions League matches at the Stadio Olimpico this season but almost netted an own goal when Alessandro Florenzi tried to head clear a free kick but sent the ball flashing across the face of goal.

But Roma came back from the break with renewed intensity and Dzeko scored in the 51st minute to bring the sides level at 2-2.

In the 29th minute, Taison nearly gave the Ukrainian side the lead with a well struck shot from 25-yards but it could not dip in time to beat Roma goalkeeper Alisson.

Ordets was shown a red card for tugging on Dzeko's shirt before a scuffle broke out on the pitch after two Shakhtar players pushed a ballboy over the advertising boards for holding on to the ball.

"What I liked best is that we played like men and that's the most important thing if we want to aspire to certain goals and dreams", said Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco, in his first ever Champions League campaign.

"Everyone deserves a standing ovation because we all gave absolutely everything tonight and we fully deserve to be in the quarter-finals", Dzeko was quoted as saying by Sky Sports Italia.
