Friends spot great white shark off Florida coast while fishing

Great white shark startles anglers with sudden appearance behind boat ‘I was in shock

The incident, caught on camera, shows a dark shadow in the water slowly approaching the boat some 26 miles off of Ponce Inlet, later becoming clear to be the predator.

Great white sharks are believed to be mature when they are about 13-14 feet and can reach sizes up to about 21 feet in length.

Around 2:30 p.m., he said he started pulling the anchor of the boat when he saw a bunch of remora fish dashing toward what appeared to be a "great, gray blob".

The shark was an estimated at 12- to 15-feet-long, compared to the 23-foot boat the group was fishing aboard. "Oh my (expletive) God, bro", the men shouted in a video that captured the great white circling the boat.

Morningstar said this was not the first time he had gone out fishing but never encountered a great white before, especially this big.

The Great Whites migrate south to Florida for the winter, but still linger off of the Florida coast during the spring and fall.

"We ran around our boat and that monster shark just circled around us, did two laps just checking us out", he said.

"I looked down and saw a gray thing coming up as two or three ramora fish swam towards it", he explained.

Morningstar then grabbed his phone and starting filming.

Kyle Morningstar, 31 of Port Orange, posted the video to Instagram.

"Dude, that's wonderful! What a rush", one Instagram user commented. "What a rush." Another added: "I would have died".

Great white sharks are the largest predatory fish in the world, with some recorded up to 20 feet long.

"Of the 100-plus annual shark attacks worldwide, fully one-third to one-half are attributable to great whites", National Geographic reports.

George Burgess, a shark expert, told the News-Journal that it's the right time of the year for such encounters off Florida's coast.
