GOP senator wants Trump to face 2020 primary challenge

US President Donald Trump signed off Thursday on tariffs on steel and aluminum imports in the Oval Office triggering a backlash from his own party

The orders were signed over the objections of more than 100 congressional Republicans, who urged Trump in a letter to at least pare back the scope of the tariffs.

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., listens to a question from a reporter before a Senate procedural vote to reopen the government, Monday Jan. 22, 2018, on day three of the government shutdown on Capitol Hill in Washington.

The interview ended before Todd had a chance to ask Flake whether he meant to be that 2020 challenger.

"Do you think he needs to be challenged from somebody who espouses your views?" "If I came like a stiff, you guys wouldn't be here tonight", he said, launching into an impression of himself as a boring president who does boring things, like expressing respect for the military or saying "God bless you". "But that's not to say it will stay that way".

This is not the first time Flake has brought up the notion. Mr Trump's tariffs, announced on Thursday and expected to take effect on March 24, "will not trigger a crisis or an explosion in the US-UAE relationship", said Danny Sebright, President of the US-UAE Business Council.

He added: "I also think that there will be an independent challenge, particularly if the Democrats insist on putting somebody up from the far left of the party".

Jeff Flake, the retiring Republican senator from Arizona and frequent critic of President Donald Trump, said somebody should challenge Trump for the GOP presidential nomination in 2020. They include former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, House Speaker Paul Ryan, former Defense Secretary Colin Powell, and Trump's own U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, among others.

Appearing on NBC's Meet the Press this morning, Flake - who has been outspoken in his Trump criticism for a while now - criticized the behavior exhibited by the president at his off-the-rails campaign rally last night, stating that "we should never normalize this kind of behavior". "'We are calling it tax reform" instead of a tax cut", he explained.
