In Pyeongchang hosted the opening ceremony of the Paralympics in 2018

However, the Queenslander is now only the sixth athlete to compete in both Summer and Winter Paralympic Games, and joins Jess Gallagher as the only other dual medallist.

The show of division came on the same day that President Donald Trump announced that he agreed to meet face-to-face with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

But they entered the stadium separately for the Paralympics after failing to agree on which version of the united flag to use.

ParalympicsGB has sent a 17-strong team of athletes, though only snowboarders Pick, Ben Moore and James Barnes-Miller, and 2014 gold-medal-winning visually impaired skier Kelly Gallagher and her guide Gary Smith attended the ceremony.

Sin Eui Hyun carried the flag of South Korea as he led his country's contingent into the opening ceremony.

North Korea's first Winter Paralympians did not appear alongside South Korea's team, as happened at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony, after a row over the blue-and-white Korean unification flag. The games run until March 18.

The background of the North's athletes suggests their presence is part of Pyongyang's political maneouvring - the pair, both students, only started skiing in December, having previously played disabled table tennis, according to Games organisers. He got into sports by playing wheelchair basketball in 2009 and also played para ice hockey in the past.

There was a silver lining, though, in the unity among the two torchbearers - one North Korean and one South Korean.

American snowboarder Brenna Huckaby, who lost her right leg below the knee, made headlines when she featured in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue.

The competitions for athletes with disabilities became more popular following World War II, offering veterans who had been injured during wartime a chance to compete.

Among the athletes are 30 neutral competitors from Russian Federation, which remains suspended by the IPC over a mass doping scandal. The Ukrainians will be competing in biathlon, cross-country skiing and snowboarding.

The International Paralympic Committee announced that the neighboring nations would have their own entourages on Thursday - just a day before the opening ceremony.
