Korea's Spy Chief Meets Japanese Foreign Minister to Brief on N. Korea

Pres. Obama’s Security Adviser Says Trump’s Meeting With N. Korean Leader Cannot Be ‘Reality Show

Since US President Donald Trump announced last week he was willing to meet North Korea's Kim Jong-un, speculation has mounted over where might be chosen to host the first-ever meeting between sitting leaders of the two countries.

It would be reasonable to hold a summit meeting after North Korea takes concrete steps toward abandoning its missile and nuclear programs.

Now, in a head-snapping display of incoherence, Trump has agreed to meet Kim, giving the planet's worst human-rights abuser what he most wants: worldwide legitimacy.

Members of the US Congress said they worry that Trump acted impulsively in agreeing to meet with Kim, before negotiators for both countries had a chance to set some goals the leaders could agree to. He then delivered President Moon's gratitude for Trump's support for the progress made with North Korea and said the special envoys' visit was primarily meant to convey South Korea's desire for Seoul and Washington to move forward in total cooperation.

"The offer was made and we'€™ve accepted", she said.

When asked whether the message concerned the release of three American hostages in North Korea, as had been speculated before the South's delegation arrived in the USA, the source denied it, saying that the message is more "comprehensive in content". Recounting his visit to Pyongyang, Chung said Kim Jong-un seemed genuine and honest.

"If North Korea accepts inspections, Japan will fully cooperate in financial aid and other things so that the IAEA would be able to conduct inspections immediately", Kono told reporters. But he says the US does expect to hear directly from Pyongyang. "We've not heard anything directly back from North Korea but we expect to hear something directly from them", he said during a visit to Nigeria. Pyongyang declared previous year that it had pulled off the remarkable feat of becoming a nuclear power - a move thought to be aimed at gaining leverage in talks with the U.S.

Mr Pompeo and Mr Mnuchin said the United States would make no concessions and would keep the pressure on North Korea by maintaining economic sanctions and a strong USA defense posture before the meeting.

The South Korean newspaper cited an unidentified senior official in South Korea's presidential office.

In Geneva, the United Nations investigator on North Korea told the world body's Human Rights Council that any progress in the nuclear and security dialogue must be accompanied by talks on human rights violations, including political prison camps.

Among them are Christian missionaries Kim Jung-wook, who was arrested in October 2013, and Kim Kook-kie and Choi Chun-kil, who have been held since 2014, the ministry said.
