National School Walkout to honor victims, protest gun violence

Principal Curtis Wilson organizes the students

The group plans to meet at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds, which is about 2,000 feet from Coeur d'Alene High School.

On Wednesday, she will go to her 10 a.m. literature class wearing orange, set her books down and then walk out of the room with a sign. I asked another student to share their connection with the damaging effects of gun violence. Students should check with their school's policies about leaving school grounds without permission before walking off campus. Multiple lanes of westbound East Washington Avenue will need to be closed.

"I think they're taking a stand on fear", said Suzanne Cohen.

Some students have said they hope that the short time out of class will make a difference and place pressure on lawmakers at every level to do something about gun laws.

Several school districts have released statements ahead of Wednesday's walkout. Even students in Hawaii will host a scattering of rallies in support of gun control legislation and an end to firearm violence, according to organizers behind the Women's March. I am writing to inform you about events planned for March 14th, a day when many students across the country, including in Madison, are planning to voice their concerns collectively and demand action.

While the national effort is promoting a 17-minute event - one minute for each of the victims - Haywood schools aren't holding the events to that time frame.

Students gathered on the steps of the old Florida Capitol in Tallahassee, Fla., on February 21, ahead of the Wednesday walkout.

Support has also come from the American Civil Liberties Union and Viacom Inc (VIAB.O), which said all seven of its networks, including MTV, would suspend programming at 10 a.m.in each USA time zone during the 17-minute walkout.

We're also aware that some students, from Madison and around the state, plan to walk to the Capitol during the afternoon of March 14. We are saying we don't want to be unsafe anymore.

However, students who attend approved activities will not get in trouble because they will have teacher supervision.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our district office at 843-899-8600. However, they have been invited to complete an online survey about school safety.

Students from at least nine Howard County schools have planned walkouts for this morning as part of a national protest against gun violence.

The school system has also prohibited reporters from coming on school property to cover the walkouts. "We're going to make sure that politicians understand we're not going to forget about this". If a walkout does occur, our schools and classes will continue on their normal schedule for students who choose not to participate.
