Russian exile Nikolai Glushkov found dead in London

BRITAIN-ESPIONAGE-RUSSIA

The counter-terrorism command unit is leading the investigation into the March 12 death of Nikolai Glushkov, a close associate of late Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky, the Metropolitan police said.

Counter-terror police are examining the death of a Russian businessman in London, believed to be Nikolai Glushkov.

Glushkov, who worked for Berezovsky's companies Aeroflot and AvtoVAZ, was discovered by his daughter Natalya at his house in New Malden in southwest London on Monday, the reports said.

The Metropolitan police also said that "the death is now being treated as an unexplained", while "there is no evidence to suggest a link to the incident in Salisbury". Police said he committed suicide but Glushkov told The Guardian in 2013 that he suspected foul play. In 1999, Glushkov was charged with money laundering and fraud after Berezovsky fell out with Russian President Vladimir Putin and fled to Britain. "A post-mortem examination will be held in due course", the source added.

In the 1990s, Glushkov served as deputy managing director at Russia's flag carrier Aeroflot and worked for Berezovsky's LogoVAZ vehicle company.

In 2011, Glushkov gave evidence at the court case brought by Berezovsky against his fellow oligarch Roman Abramovich, who remained on good terms with the Kremlin, the Guardian reported.

The death is believed to be of Nikolai Glushkov, who was convicted of fraud and money-laundering in Russian Federation and served five years in prison before being released and fleeing to the UK.

At the time of his death, he was living alone in New Malden, south-west London and was said to be a "nice man" who used to give his neighbour's children gifts at Christmas.

In March 2013, Berezovksy was found dead in Berkshire.

In 2017, during a trial in absentia in Russia, Glushkov was sentenced to eight years in prison for stealing $123m from Aeroflot.
