Southampton sack manager Pellegrino

It was widely believed that Silva would top Southampton's list of replacements for Mauricio Pellegrino, who was sacked by the club on Monday.

Pellegrino, a former Argentina worldwide, secured the equivalent of 0.93 points per game, the third-worst tally of any Southampton manager in the Premier League. Hovering just one spot above the relegation zone Southampton are in danger of losing the top-flight status they acquired six seasons ago.

Saturday's 3-0 defeat by Newcastle United had left them a place and a point above the relegation zone and sealed the Argentine's fate.

Of their eight remaining league fixtures five are away from home and two of their home matches are against Chelsea and Manchester City. "It's now time to move on, appoint a new manager, and get out of the trouble we are in at the moment".

Pellegrino, only appointed in the summer, paid the price for Southampton's alarming recent form.

Assistant manager Carlos Compagnucci and assistant first-team coach Xavier Tamarit have also parted company with the south coast club.

The team, who are now one point outside the relegation zone, have taken on the form of their coach in recent months in that they've become nearly entirely anonymous, with no recognisable approach or identity to speak of.

So they hired Pellegrino, and nine months on they must be regretting their decision.

Hughes played more than 50 times for Southampton in the late 1990s and his appointment would end a run of four non-British managers after Mauricio Pochettino, Ronald Koeman, Puel and Pellegrino.

According to both Sky Bet and Oddschecker Mark Hughes is the favourite to be the next Southampton manager.

"There are all sorts of managers mentioned; Mark Hughes has a lot of Premier League experience and I think that will count in his favour".
