This $10000 3D-Printed Concrete House Took Only 24 Hours to Build

The company says it can now build their single-story home for $10,000 using an industrial-sized Vulcan printer but is working to drop that cost to $4,000.

According to the report, ICON is focused on bringing affordable housing to the estimated 1.2 billion people around the world who do not have adequate shelter.

A start-up based in Austin, Texas will be mass producing small homes using 3D printing technology to find a solution to the problem of affordable housing around the world.

ICON has built up a technique for 3D-printing of a solitary story 650-square-foot house out of cement in only 12 to 24 hours.

The 3D Vulcan printer which was used in making the house is reported to be massive, but still portable.

How long will the homes last?

New Story is also involved in urban planning, and can build homes around schools, play areas and employment opportunities. However, by working alongside ICON, they now have access to the impressive Vulcan 3D printer. Eventually, ICON hopes to reduce this construction cost to just $4,000. For this venture to succeed, they have to be the best houses...

"The walls of the printed house are stronger than cinder blocks after a few days of hardening", said Icon co-founder Evan Loomis, "although the house is ready for human occupation after the home is set up - which entails crew members installing windows, a wooden roof, basic plumbing, and electrical plumbing as the house is printed".

Since these structures need to be sturdy and hospitable, the companies aren't taking any risks and will be refining the process right up until they take it over to El Salvador.

In the meantime, if you'd like to join the effort to eliminate homelessness on Planet Earth, you can donate to the cause on the New Story website.
