Tower Records founder Russ Solomon has died aged 92

According to the Sacramento Bee, Solomon died at home on Sunday night while watching last night's Academy Awards.

"Ironically, he was giving his opinion of what someone was wearing that he thought was ugly, then asked (his wife) Patti to to refill his whiskey", Solomon said. Rest in peace, Russ.

Tower Records was a force in the music industry for many years until the digital music revolution.

The younger Solomon in the documentary recalled how he would buy used records for three cents each and found ready buyers when he resold them for 10 cents. The Tower Records at the corner of Columbus and Bay streets opened in 1968 and became a landmark for all things cool for generations. He opened his first stand-alone record store in 1960.

The elder Solomon began selling records out of his dad's drugstore in 1941 at just 16 years old.

The obvious choice was, of course, San Francisco.

The store, during its height of relevance, expanded to locations in Japan, South Korea, Ireland and would bring in an annual $1 billion in revenue.

Yet, the bubble would soon burst.

At its peak, Tower Records had more than 200 stores in 30 countries on 5 continents.

Solomon, who transformed his Sacramento record store into an worldwide chain that included multiple San Diego locations, was watching the Oscars telecast with his wife, Patti, and drinking a glass of whiskey at the time of his death.
