Trump abandons age 21 rifle purchase restriction

Betsy De Vos speaks at a news conference following a visit to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School

"Things are moving rapidly on this, but not much political support (to put it mildly)", Trump wrote on Twitter.

During a meeting with six students and families from the Florida high school in the White House last month, Trump pledged to be "strong" on increasing the age limit.

The White House said it had put off some of the more "controversial" proposals - including raising the minimum purchase age - for further study by a new commission led by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

"We can't just keep setting up blue-ribbon committees with your wife and your wife and your husband, and they meet and they have a meal and they talk talk talk talk".

"His remarks at this meeting were intensely revealing precisely because they showed once again that Trump is nearly wholly devoid of core beliefs", she wrote in the National Review.

Scott said the Florida legislation - though already in the crosshairs of the NRA - shows Florida, unlike the federal government, can move quickly and "get things done".

"Trump is committed to destroying ISIS, and the global coalition will hunt these terrorists wherever they hide", the statement said.

But the White House plan released Sunday does not address the minimum age for gun purchases. It's just such a striking fact of the American gun control debate that this whole issue is being discussed around arming schools.

The administration also pledged to help states pay for firearms training for teachers and reiterated its call to improve the background check and mental health systems.

So help me understand a little bit more, because there seems to be some confusion about what the Trump administration's stance is on whether certain issues around gun safety in schools should be dealt with at the state level or at the federal level. They're a potentially important mechanism - but not as aggressive as what Trump outlined. On Saturday night, the president was at a rally in Pennsylvania and mocked the idea of blue ribbon commissions as an approach to dealing with drug abuse.

Less than two weeks after Donald Trump chided Republican lawmakers for fearing the National Rifle Association and not being ambitious enough in their work to curb gun violence, the President seems to have backed down too.

The most recent HuffPost/YouGov poll, which set up a similar experiment, found that Republicans' opinions of several of the policies Trump espoused stayed about the same, whether the poll mentioned his name or not.

Lily Eskelsen García, president of the NEA, the teachers lobby, said last month that "bringing more guns into our schools does nothing to protect our students and educators from gun violence".

A Republican who speaks with senior White House officials regularly says this is what many aides were looking to avoid.

Sessions directed federal agencies to verify within 45 days that they are in full compliance or plan to become compliant with an existing law requiring agencies to report relevant records to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. "But I'm saying it anyway", Trump said in a February 28 meeting with lawmakers.

"In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, President Trump called on representatives of over 50 Muslim-majority nations to do more to combat terror and extremist ideology", it said.

The tepid steps lessened the hopes of gun control advocates that Trump would take a stand in the wake of the Parkland shooting.
