Wind up Aircel-Maxis probe in six months

The case will be heard next on 2 April

A bench led by Justice Arun Mishra directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to complete the probe within six months, observing that "you can not keep the people of the country in the dark".

"This a very serious and sensitive case. We are anxious about this case, we are very unhappy", said the bench observing that the investigation has been going on for long time, reports IANS.

The apex court while slamming probe agencies for delay in investigation warned the CBI and ED that further delay will attract contempt of court against the officials. We are unhappy the way things are going on as the investigation has not seen light of the day. "Army and others are contributing and helping in this matter and if in case there arises any difficulty in conducting the investigation then immediately he will inform the court", Singh said. The direction of the Supreme Court has come after Tushar Mehta appointed as the special public prosecutor in all 2G scam related cases.

Insisting that the people can not be kept in dark with regards to investigations into sensitive matters such as the 2G spectrum case, it allowed the Centre to file a status report on all investigations in the case in two weeks.

A special court in Delhi acquitted all the accused in the 2G spectrum allocation cases in December 2017. The top court said, "if not probe agencies, are invisible hands not completing 2G probe".

In the Aircel-Maxis controversy, one of the 2G scam related case, the focus has been shifted to former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

The CBI had claimed that M/s Global Communication Services Holdings Ltd had sought Foreign Investement Promotion Board (FIPB) approval for 800 million Dollars for which only the CCEA was competent, but Chidambaram had given approval to the firm in March 2006.

In the Aircel-Maxis deal, the FIPB approval was supposed to go to the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs.
