American woman wins Boston Marathon, first in 33 years

Desiree Linden, the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon since 1985, nearly dropped out as the wind and rain lashed runners on the 26.2-mile course.

For the fourth year in a row, Marcel Hug of Switzerland won the men's push rim wheelchair division, while American Tatyana McFadden won the women's push rim wheelchair division for the fifth time. "It's storybook, so I'm thrilled to be here and to get it done". Although the marathon was won by Japanese runner Yuki Kawauchi (2:10:46), Americans Shadrack Biwott (2:18:35) and Tyler Pennel (2:19:52) ranked in third and fourth, respectively.

When Flanagan darted into a port-a-potty on the sidelines less than halfway into the race, Linden was already feeling like she might not even finish and was ready to help her friend win in any way she could.

We saw their friendship play out in real time at the 2018 Boston Marathon.

Kawauchi told WBZ-TV he was "freezing cold" after the race, but said the conditions were the best he could possibly run in.

Hometown favorite Shalane Flanagan, a four-time Olympian and the reigning New York City Marathon champion, finished sixth after popping into a course-side portable toilet before the halfway point and falling behind the lead pack. "I told her [Flanagan] in the race, I said if there's anything I can do to help you out, let me know because I might just drop out".

As for herself, Flanagan was reportedly unsure she would even finish the Boston Marathon. Her finishing time was 2:39:54.

Linden then made her move, passing Daska, then moments later overtaking Chesir for the lead and never giving it up.

Before Linden, the last American woman to win the Boston Marathon was Lisa Rainsberger in 1985.

Coming in right behind Linden, American runner Sarah Sellers finished second in today's women's race, with a time of 2:44:05.
