Apple to launch a premium news subscription service, report says

If Apple goes through with these plans, it would be treating news similarly to how it treated music around the creation of Apple Music.

Following its acquisition of all-you-can-read magazine service Texture in March, Apple is planning to launch a news subscription service, Bloomberg reports today.

Apple News is now a free app that delivers a personalized selection of content from a choice of publishers, with the ability to follow certain topics as well as subscribe to magazines and newspapers directly through news. Some analysts in the past have suggested that Apple should look into getting into a more subscription-like business model, and this certainly sounds like what Apple could be doing. While you can already purchase subscriptions through the Apple News app, which no doubt earns Apple some money, selling individual issues or subscriptions isn't quite the same as offering people a huge bundle of content in exchange for a single monthly fee. This heavy-handed strategy means that Apple won't respond to some day-to-day press inquiries, unless it's to set the record straight on unflattering reports.

The service will come from integrating the acquired magazine app Texture into Apple News to boost services sales. The company bought Beats Music in 2014, shortly before debuting Apple Music with its $9.99-per-month paid tier.

While not all magazine publishers are focused on "news", those who do cover tech and Apple specifically, could become uncomfortable with also relying on Apple for subscription revenues. It also gets a cut of subscriptions sold by third-party apps on the App Store. This time, Apple let roughly 20 people go from Texture, including assistants, software engineers, and managers, according to one of the people familiar with the matter. Texture previously had about 100 staff members.
