BORDER CHAOS: California BANS TROOPS from Helping Border Patrol Agents

California rejects plan to send National Guard troops to Mexico border, AP reports

California's Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown, who has repeatedly come in President Trump's political crosshairs, received rare praise from the president last week after he agreed to installing 400 troops in the National Guard's third large-scale border mission since 2006.

California has rejected the Trump administration's initial plans for National Guard troops at the state's border with Mexico, arguing the work is too closely tied to immigration enforcement.

Also a deputy assistant secretary at the Defense Department, Robert Salesses, claimed California has diminished to commit more than 200 troops to the campaign. "And the California National Guard will not be enforcing federal immigration laws".

The state's position infuriated some federal officials because the restrictions California officials wanted to impose on what the state's troops would not do were considered onerous, the officials said.

The Trump administration says it will send as many as 4,000 to cope with a jump in illegal crossings, after arrests along the Mexico border hit their highest level in 15 months. It is unclear at this point what specific jobs the troops would, or would not, perform at the border.

Lt. Col. Thomas Keegan said Monday afternoon that "state officials have not rejected anything since the Governor responded to the federal government last Wednesday with the proposed 'Memorandum of Agreement between the State of California and The Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security'".

Vitiello made the comments to reporters in Washington Monday after two US officials told The Associated Press said terms of the federal government's initial plans for sending National Guard troops to the border because the work is considered too closely tied to immigration.

Pentagon officials said Monday they are still calculating what the troop deployment will cost.
