Bruins teach Leafs a playoff lesson in Game 1

The Toronto Maple Leafs survived losing all of the puck battles, at first, but they could not survive getting whipped on special teams. Updates with new lead.

David Krejci, with a goal and an assist, David Backes and Sean Kuraly rounded out the scoring for Boston, which got 26 saves from Tuukka Rask.

The Boston Bruins forward is usually going full-speed on the ice, whether it's chasing the puck on the forecheck or sizing up an opponent for a hit.

Kuraly added to Boston's lead at 7:41 in the third, batting the puck out of the air and past Andersen right after a breakaway attempt from Pastrnak.

With Zdeno Chara pinching up on the play, Hyman raced towards a sliding puck and beat David Krejci to it before eluding Charlie McAvoy in the Bruins' slot.

While it is only the first game, the way it ended gives a feeling that this one may not go the distance, with the Bruins jumping out to a 1-0 series lead after winning the game by the score of 5-1. "To go from 100 miles per hour and hitting everything that moves and (wait) in front of the net, it can be a challenge".

With Marchand's work along the boards, Pastrnak found an open lane to receive a pass, and after the first attempt was stopped, a second shot found it's way past Andersen to make it 3-1.

Boston stretched its lead to two with 38 seconds left in the period when Pastrnak took a feed from Marchand and zipped a shot past Andersen's glove. To me, that's a huge factor in any series if their good players are good. "It has nothing to do with baseball". Unfortunately, the Bruins fell 4-2 in the second of back-to-back games last Sunday and had to settle for this matchup instead.

Expect another round of close games, much like the Washington series, because Mike Babcock will concoct a great game plan and likely find a way to close the gaps between the teams, but the Bruins should prevail, after all 6 games are said and done. Babcock said. "The beauty about this is we've got a day to solve our problems and we can feel sorry for ourselves if we want here tonight, but that's a waste of time and energy".

Two-goal leads can be among the most unsafe in the game, but when you put your team short-handed so much, it is all for naught. Toronto has five holdovers with bitter memories of that postseason, including forward Nazem Kadri, who thought he clinched it when he scored with 5:29 gone in the third to make it 4-1. "Where it goes from here is out of my hands".

They got another lesson Thursday about what it takes to win at this time of year.

There's been plenty of turnover on both sides since, but the Bruins' core that made it all the way to Stanley Cup final that year remains largely intact.

On an odd-man rush, Torey Krug set up Brad Marchand with a lovely area pass that started with the defenseman passing the puck through the legs of Maple Leafs' defender Roman Polak.

In the first seven minutes, the Leafs were given two power plays. Once again showing why they are one of the best tandems in the league, they almost gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead.

Marchand was at his agitating best earlier in the period when he nudged Leafs defenceman Nikita Zaitsev into Andersen to draw a crowd, and licked Leo Komarov's face in the first - the second time that's happened this season.

The Bruins' second goal with the man advantage came after the Leafs wasted two power-play chances of their own earlier in the period.
