Central Park Removing Statue Of Doctor Who Experimented On Female Slaves

В Центральном парке снесут статую врача проводившего эксперименты на рабынях

The city of NY removed the statue of Doctor J. Marion Sims from Central Park on Tuesday.

Sims, widely regarded as the "father of modern gynecology", established the first hospital for women in New York City in 1855.

But it was the only one of four statues on public land that New York Mayor Bill de Blasio agreed to relocate following the review, as the United States debates tributes to figures whose legacies are increasingly scrutinized. He invented the speculum and pioneered a surgical technique for repairing a vesicovaginal fistula, a complication of obstructed childbirth.

The Sims statue is the only monument in the city that the commission recommended to move.

The move comes after a number of public protests over the Sims statue.

But he also performed experimental operations on black female slaves without anesthesia. "Sims is not our hero", shouted the others. It will be relocated to where Sims is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.

"The relocation of the Sims monument to Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn by the City of New York denotes that this physical representation of anti-black violence will still stand and maintain its presence in the heart of yet another community of color", Amrit Trewn, an activist, said, according to The New York Times.

For now the city wants to keep the statue, but it's unclear when it will be moved to Brooklyn.

The names of many black women on whom Sims experimented are not known.

In the beginning of 2018, the Commission determined the fate of the most controversial monuments, including the legendary Explorer and discoverer of America Christopher Columbus.

A temporary sign will be placed at the Central Park site where the statue was until the city decides what to put in its place, officials said.
