Comey: 'Possible' that Russians have leverage over Trump

"How could that be?"

The FBI director, who until his firing last May led an investigation into possible ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, said it was "stunning" to think Russian Federation could have damaging information about an American president.

Comey said he took that as a "direction", adding it is possibly obstruction of justice.

A copy of former FBI Director James Comey's new book, "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies and Leadership," is on display, Friday, April 13, 2018, in NY.

Mr. Trump fired him as head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation on May 9, 2017.

Initially, however, the chyron read, "Comey resigns". "What she did was really sloppy", Comey said.

Comey said in the exclusive interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos, which aired at 10 p.m. on Sunday (0200 GMT on Monday), that it is "possible, but I don't know" whether Russian Federation has evidence to back up the allegations about Trump's Moscow trip.

"I'm not going to try and help sell some books here", Ryan said.

Comey said he grew more wary when the chyron eventually changed to reflect that he had been fired.

"I knew this was a no-win situation, this case". "I'm going to find out'".

"Comey comes along and says, 'This reminds me of prosecuting the mob and essentially a mob boss that I'm having to deal with'". Leaked excerpts have detailed Comey's mistrust of Trump, whom he describes as "ego driven" and "untethered to the truth". Trump said on Twitter early Sunday.

Would he have still sent the letter, Mr. Stephanopoulos asked, if he knew it would get Mr. Trump elected?

Comey said he believes Trump used the moment to try to establish his dominance.

Comey also told ABC there was "certainly some evidence of obstruction of justice" when Trump asked him in 2017 whether he could see his way to "letting Flynn go", referring to a criminal probe of fired National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.

For the most part, Comey avoided commenting on the ongoing Russian Federation investigation.

"Slippery James Comey, a man who always ends up badly and out of whack (he is not smart!), will go down as the WORST FBI Director in history, by far!" "Having refused to admit his errors, the Director can not be expected to implement the necessary corrective actions".

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, interviewed on NBC's "Meet the Press", expressed qualified support for Comey. "No FBI director has ever been fired as he was investigating a president", Stephanopoulos told CNNMoney.

The President rubbished the claim on Twitter, calling it another of his many lies.

"I hope not because I think impeaching and removing Donald Trump from office would let the American people off the hook and have something happen indirectly that I believe they're duty bound to do directly". It was recorded last Monday at Comey's home in suburban Washington.

Former Attorney General Loretta Lynch is defending her actions in the Hillary Clinton email investigation following criticism from former FBI Director James Comey.

"I actually gave thought to renting a convertible and driving nearly 3000 miles", he told Stephanopoulos.

Still, he said it strikes him as unlikely but something that he can't say without high confidence.

As the plane neared Washington, Comey said he asked the pilots if he could sit with them in the cockpit because he wanted to watch them as they worked.

[He] talks about and treats women like they're pieces of meat [and] lies constantly about matters big and small, said Mr Comey.
