Commonwealth Games 2018: WATCH shocking moment Callum Hawkins COLLAPSES in marathon

Callum Hawkins falls to his knees for the first time

The final day of the Commonwealth Games was marred when Scottish athlete Callum Hawkins was left without medical attention on the marathon course after collapsing in brutal heat during the last event of the athletics programme. He dropped three close pursuers in the 28th kilometre and by 35km had built up a lead of well over two minutes over Shelley.

While Hawkins may have been resistant to receive treatment knowing it would constitute an instant disqualification from the race - which was eventually won by Australia's Michael Shelley - under IAAF rules, authorities have the power to force a retirement and administer treatment straightaway "if ordered to do so by the Medical Delegate, or a medical doctor who is a member of the official medical staff".

Hawkins was taken to hospital by ambulance and Team Scotland confirmed the runner's health was not in any serious danger.

"First and foremost we're delighted to say that he's up in bed talking to his father and is being well looked after, both by the hospital staff and the Team Scotland medical staff", Bush told BBC Scotland.

"He is undergoing further tests as a precaution and we all wish him a speedy recovery".

Shelley ran past Hawkins as help arrived. An athlete works all their life to win gold medals.

"No. He should be assisted now. No".

"This is distressing. Incredibly distressing".

Seven reporter Pat Welsh revealed the fearless Scot initially refused help from medical teams, knowing it would force him out of the race.

But it was still 90-seconds before anyone arrived on the scene.

"He hit his head on the barrier. When I was coming down the home straight I tried to accelerate but I was just gone". "He's going to hurt himself and there's nobody anywhere near", he said.

People watching the race on TV took to social media to express their outrage at the time it took to get medical attention to the Scot, reserving particular ire for those spectators taking photos of Hawkins.

"This is a guy in real distress and someone needs to recognise it for his health at this point".

"Where on earth is the help?" " He explained. "you can not wait in the finish line. They've got radios. I think it's disgraceful".

In addition to the slow resonse to Hawkins' collapse, pundits and experts questioned the 8:15am start time for the race. "I'm glad to be finished to be honest", added Shelley.

Games organisers later issued a release saying the health and safety of all athletes was paramount.

Mark Peters, GOLDOC's chief executive, said in a statement: "I, like many others, was distressed to see a wonderful athlete like Callum collapse during the closing stages".

Callum Hawkins of Scotland is given assistance as he collapses in the Men's marathon.

"GOLDOC has put in place a wide range of measures to ensure athlete welfare and the response of medical staff this morning was within agreed response guidelines and timeframes".

"I just tried running my own race", said the 34-year-old, who also claimed Commonwealth marathon silver in 2010. "This is not in keeping with the spirit of GC2018".

Callum Hawkins of Scotland, Kenneth Mburu Mungara of Kenya, Saidi Juma Makula of Tanzania, Munyo Solomon Mutai of Uganda, Liam Adams of Australia and Julius Nderitu Karinga of Kenya compete.
