During the closing ceremony of the sporting extravaganza in Gold Coast, Australia, athletes from all the competing countries were seen marching at Carrara Stadium before the ceremony even started.

In a statement sent during the Ceremony, Gold Coast 2018 admitted it was not at full capacity but claimed there were over 30,000 people in the Stadium.

"We're in the process of talking about these things and yes, we want to take the Commonwealth slightly further", she said, taking inspiration from swimming's Duel, which pitted the United States against Australia or Europe.


Channel Seven, meanwhile, stood by host Johanna Griggs' scathing verdict live on air.

She was particularly critical of the decision not to show para-sports veteran Kurt Fearnley carrying the Australian flag into Carrara Stadium, surrounded by his teammates.

"We wanted athletes to be part of and enjoy the closing ceremony".

Many athletes and fans left the closing ceremonies early, according to reports.

The Games also featured their first transgender athlete, and gay English diver Tom Daley caused a stir when he urged the 37 Commonwealth countries that outlaw homosexuality to change their laws.

While the on-field action was a success, the closing ceremony received a resounding thumbs-down, with some of the harshest criticism coming from Australia's broadcast rights holders, the Seven Network.

"AFN 2018 season's developmental programmes were put to test at the Gold Coast and we bagged five medals at the Commonwealth Games within five months".

The ceremony was largely panned on social media, with critics upset about the lack of focus on athletes, quality of the musical performances, speeches and the length of the event. She also gave special mention to the Yugambeh community and in particular the Indigenous Working Groups and local Yugambeh Advisory Group who contributed to and supported the delivery of the Games.
