CWG 2018: Indian boxers cleared of doping charges

Commonwealth Games 2018 Vikas Krishan and Co under pressure to carry forward Vijender Singh's legacy

The syringe controversy has come out to hit the Indian athletes for the 2018 Commonwealth Games (CWG) hard after a needle was found lying outside the room of a veteran boxer at the Athletes' Village (Gold Coast) on Friday.

Queensland endured one of its worst flu seasons on record past year and in February Queensland Health said the illness had already been affecting 32 people per day in the state in 2018.

Organisers hope to make the village as comfortable and safe as possible for the 6,600 athletes and team officials - and that includes their sexual health.

Grevemberg said the CGF was in talks with the concerned Commonwealth Games Association amid speculations that Indian boxers could be under the scanner in this case.

The 1,250 apartments and townhouses that comprise the athletes' village will be sold off or made available to rent from early 2019. However, CGF chief executive David Grevemberg has said it is a "clear breach" of the No-Needle Policy.

What substance, if any, had been in the syringes remains unclear.

Games organisers had summoned officials from a team they would not name over a breach of the "no-needle" policy.

"We definitely want to have this issue resolved in time for the opening ceremony", Mr Grevemberg said.

India's chef de mission didn't return calls today but the Press Trust of India has quoted an unnamed Indian official denying their athletes had done anything untoward.

Outside the country, however, the Games lacks the same pulling power and recent editions have been nearly as notable for their absentees as their confirmed starters.Barring a token appearance for Jamaica in the relays at Glasgow, athletics´ most bankable drawcard Usain Bolt steered clear of the showpiece during his brilliant career.

This, however, raises more questions than it answers: On the number of syringes used/found, the actual objective for which they were used, why no exemptions were sought if it was for a medical goal and the lack of a clear and consistent explanation by the Indian camp.

Sharath Kamal himself is one of India's longest-serving players having won the gold medal at the singles event in the 2006 Commonwealth Games and also clinching the doubles championship in 2010.

The Commonwealth Games 2018 opening ceremony will take place on Wednesday, April 4, 2018.
