DCW Chief Swati Maliwal breaks her indefinite hunger strike

Respect Arvind Kejriwal's request but won't end fast DCW chief Swati Maliwal

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal on Sunday ended her fast she launched nine-days ago after President Ram Nath Kovind approved an ordinance giving death penalty to child rapists.

Thirty-three year old Maliwal began her hunger strike at Rajghat in New Delhi in protest against the Kathua and Unnao rape cases and demanded stringent punishment for the convicted rapists. Calling it a historic victory, she said: "I was fighting alone but then I was supported by people across the country". "I will continue the fast until the ordinance is passed. I would like that she end her fast, take rest and after few months if the Government doesn't accept other demands, she sit for fast again", the Delhi Chief Minister stated.

"Till the time this ordinance does not come and till the time the plan to determine the police resources and accountability is not brought forward by the central government, this fast would not be broken", she said.

According to the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance 2018, new fast-track courts will be set up to deal with rape cases and special forensic kits will be provided to all police stations and hospitals in the long run. "We had sent more than five lakh letters to our Prime Minister that were received by DCW but no action was taken".

"People ridiculed me when I made a decision to go on hunger strike".

She had also sought that files relating to the recruitment of 14,000 police personnel - approved by the Union home ministry but pending with the finance ministry - be cleared. "The hunger strike is ending, but our struggle for women safety will continue", she said.

Earlier, the Union cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the death penalty for those convicted of raping children up to 12 years.
