Detroit Dev Quantic Dream Sues French Media Outlets Behind Toxic Workplace Reports

Earlier this year, a trio of French media outlets alleged that there were some very bad working conditions at Heavy Rain and Detroit developer Quantic Dream. Kotaku writer Cecilia D'Anastasio discovered this information during an interview with Cage, where the founder bluntly stated, "we're suing their journalists". It was then later on confirmed to Kotaku by William Audureau, one of the journalists from Le Monde, that he was indeed dealing with paperwork for the lawsuit sent by Quantic Dream.

The trio of January articles laid out a string of complaints against the company from five former Quantic Dream employees, painting a culture of alleged inappropriate behavior and homophobic, racist, and sexist jokes that were tolerated, if not encouraged, by Quantic Dream management. Quantic leaders David Cage and Guillaume de Fondaumière have dismissed the accusations as "ridiculous, absurd, and grotesque" and a "smear campaign".

Aside from that, while at a preview event for Detroit: Become Human, David Cage reportedly also confirmed that Quantic Dream was suing the journalists involved in the report. "We stick with our information".

It seems Quantic Dream wasn't just sitting idly by while these claims started circulating through various channels.

These reports were a collaborative effort between journalists from Le Monde, Mediapart, and Canard PC.

Back in January when this story first hit, Fondaumière vaguely hinted Quantic Dream would pursue legal action against the news outlets that leveled the allegations, and it seems the studio has followed through on their threats.

Under French defamation law, the sued outlets will be able to defend themselves by proving the allegations are true or by showing they were made in "good faith", (i.e., without "personal hostility" or malice and with a measured, objective tone and balance), according to a report by the Taylor Wessing law firm. The fact that this thing is a huge mess is about the only thing we know for sure.
