Disgraced Donkey Kong champ denies cheating allegations

Nintendo

Billy Mitchell, newly disgraced arcade gaming champion and star of the documentary King of Kong, has issued a statement following last week's revelation that his Donkey Kong score, and indeed all his other record breaking arcade scores, had been disqualified after a lengthy investigation by Twin Galaxies. However, his expertise came into question earlier this year as evidence shows that he was cheating using an emulator to attain high scores. In a new statement, the former King of Kong denied the charges against him, promising that his Donkey Kong scores are genuine and authentic.

Previously, American organization Twin Galaxies had conducted an investigation into Mitchell's scores after allegations emerged that the subject of the King of Kong documentary had, in fact, been utilizing emulation software known as MAME to achieve the scores earned in that very documentary.

As reported by Eurogamer, Mitchell released the following statement through Old School Gamer Magazine, a publication he is affiliated with. Due to his use of an emulator, his high scores have been removed from the Guinness World Records as well as the Twin Galaxies website. As such, Billy Mitchell was no longer considered the high score holder, with Steve Wiebe taking his place as the first official million point record holder.

In a professional manner, not in a shock-jock mentality designed to create hits, we will show that everything that has been done - everything was done - professionally, according to the rules, according to the scoreboard, [and] the integrity that was set up.

Only time will tell what Mitchell's investigation will bring, or if Twin Galaxies and Guinness will even consider any evidence that's uncovered. Now, Billy Mitchell has announced that he will be revealing evidence to prove his innocence at a future date that will clear his name. Witnesses, documents, everything will be made available to you.
