Dustin Poirier Makes His Case For Being UFC's Top Lightweight Contender

Dustin Poirier

In the main event of the evening top-ten ranked lightweights Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje will collide inside the cage for what is expected to be a heavy-hitting affair. After months of seeing fights fall out due to last minute silliness and weight issues, all fourteen matches for UFC Glendale went ahead without issue and there were a lot of finishes.

While it may sound like a far-away possibility with Nurmagomedov seemingly headed for a vast grudge match with former champ Conor McGregor, UFC President Dana White was understandably complimentary of "The Diamond" when discussing the insane match-up at UFC on FOX 29 with Megan Olivi during the post-fight show on FOX Sports 2.

After battling back-and-forth into the fourth round, Poirier finally found a crack in Gaethje's armor and finished the fight.

Dustin Poirier hobbled in on crutches after way-too-many kicks made it tough to bend his right leg.

Poirier secured a fourth round victory over Gaethje at UFC Fight Night, in Arizona, despite a badly injured right leg and a swollen right eye.

"I'm content with what just happened, as insane and as stupid as that sounds", said Gaethje, the No. 6 lightweight.

Gaethje, 29, who has firmly established a reputation in three UFC fights for providing entertainment, also suffered his second straight defeat via violent knockout.

Gaethje earned the nickname "The Highlight" for his hyper aggressive style, but Poirier took the fight to him.

While it gets sorted, Poirier could potentially rematch former champ Eddie Alvarez, whom he nearly defeated at UFC 211 previous year before an illegal knee led to a questionable no contest from Herb Dean.

"This guy has no quit in him", Poirier said of his opponent. "But I felt like I got my wheels under me pretty quick".
