E. coli tied to lettuce sickens dozens in 11 states

Nine people in Pennsylvania have gotten sick in a national e. Coli outbreak from contaminated chopped romaine lettuce, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Illnesses that occurred after March 27, 2018, might not yet be reported due to the time it takes between when a person becomes ill with E. coli and when the illness is reported.

Before purchasing romaine lettuce at a grocery store or eating it at a restaurant, consumers should confirm with the store or restaurant that it is not chopped romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region.

Epidemiologic evidence collected to date indicates that chopped romaine lettuce is the likely source of this outbreak.

As of Friday, no deaths were reported in the latest outbreak but three of those sickened developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome, the CDC reported. That's all the information the US agency gives in that regard as it adds, "no common grower, supplier, distributor, or brand has been identified". There were also cases in Connecticut, New York, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Virginia and Washington state.

States that have reported people infected with the E. coli strain include Washington, Idaho, Missouri, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and MI. Anyone with these symptoms should see a doctor immediately. This weekend stores here in Page had signs about the information and their pre-made salads were almost sold out- the CDC says the bags of pre-made salad containing romaine are not considered safe either so be on the safe side and toss in the trash and not in a salad. If it is unclear from where the lettuce came from Yuma, do not purchase it, CDC suggested. In most cases, symptoms appear three to four days after the bacteria is ingested.

The symptoms of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli infections vary, but usually include severe and painful stomach cramps and bloody diarrhea.
