Facebook is planning to build its own computer chips

Facebook Jumping on the Cool Kids Bandwagon

According to job listings that have cropped up, the social network is looking to employ a manager responsible for handling the build of an "end-to-end SoC/ASIC, firmware and driver development organisation".

The outlet reports that Facebook is now in the early stages of building a team to design silicon semiconductors, an "end-to-end SoC/ASIC, firmware and driver development organization".

The Menlo Park, California-based company is planning to reduce their dependence on chipmakers such as Intel and Qualcomm by developing its own chips. Reports came that Facebook has recently invested a lot in making their own chips. Alphabet Inc.'s Google has developed its own artificial intelligence chip as well. Facebook seems to be joining the same bandwagon as Google and Apple.

The job descriptions fit into two categories: chips for artificial intelligence, also called machine learning, and chips for Facebook's Oculus virtual reality headsets.

A system on chip, or SOC, is a type of semiconductor that contains several discrete components built into one piece of silicon.

The job role requires the manager to build a team which will look after the hardware for building chips, AI software or servers and others. As the processor advance is moderating, a few organizations are swinging to custom processors called ASICs (application-particular incorporated circuits) or to versatile chips called FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays) that can be tuned to accelerate particular assignments.

Facebook is looking at both the chips and analyzing which one to go with. Indeed that very job posting is still live on Facebook's online job board at the time of writing. It might be possible that Facebook could use these chips to power its own hardware devices, servers in data centers and AI softwares.
