Up to 87 million Facebook users recently had their data, including birthdays, current cities and page likes, compromised by Cambridge Analytica, a political data firm hired by President Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign.
The company adds that the data it collects isn't covered by IL law, which explicitly prevents the collection of biometric data such as facial geometry, fingerprints and "voice prints".
The feature is not available to users in most countries, including the United Kingdom - and can be turned off in settings for USA users. Bumble further highlights that other apps that let users register with their phone number still share some information with Facebook, but its new system will bypass Facebook altogether.
The feature suggests who might be present in uploaded photos, based on an existing database of faces. Consequently, a number of users and companies have chose to drop the social network and delete all of their Facebook accounts and activity.
The three users have sued under an IL state law called the Biometric Information Privacy Act, which affords certain people protections over information such as fingerprints, retina scans, and facial recognition data.
It raises the stakes of face recognition - it intensifies the potential negative consequences. If private companies are scraping photos and combining them with personal info in order to make judgements about people - are you a terrorist, or how likely are you to be a shoplifter or anything in between - then it exposes everyone to the risk of being misidentified, or correctly identified and being misjudged.
What does the facial recognition do?
Applying face recognition accurately to video is extremely challenging, and we know that face recognition performs poorly with people of color and especially with women and those with darker skin tones.
Facebook did not immediately respond to Geek's request for comment.
A USA federal judge ruled on Monday that Facebook Inc must face a class action lawsuit alleging that the social network unlawfully used a facial recognition process on photos without user permission. "We also provided information about improved privacy controls and details about how our services work". "If I had to give up all social media and keep only one, it would be Facebook".
Cobbe said she believes Facebook's implementation will fall afoul of GDPR, because it will have to scan every face in photos just to see if the photo subjects have consented to use of the tech.
